Start with somewhere familiar.
Think about a place that belongs to your story: a neighborhood walk, a favorite stretch of coastline, or your home. A meaningful setting can give you something to do together instead of a pose to hold.
Check permission requirements and access before arranging a session in a private venue, park, or business. Your photographer can help plan around the light and the setting.
Choose comfort over a costume.
Wear clothes you can sit, walk, and move in. Coordinate the overall feeling rather than trying to match every color. Bring a layer or comfortable shoes if the location needs them.
Lay your outfits beside each other before the day. If one person feels overdressed or uncomfortable, adjust until the pair feels natural.
Give the photographer context.
Share what you like and what makes you feel awkward. A short set of references is useful, but leave room for your own interaction and your photographer’s approach.
- How you hope the photographs will feel
- Anything you would prefer not to do
- Whether you need images for announcements or stationery
- Your comfort with the images being published
Leave space for an ordinary moment.
Walk, make coffee, browse a bookshop with permission, or sit somewhere you love. A small activity can make the session feel less like a performance.
Agree together on which images you want to share publicly. Keeping a few favorites just for yourselves is a lovely option too.
ONE THING TO TAKE WITH YOU
A familiar place and a comfortable pace can mean more than an elaborate setup.
Put it into practice
